Since 1999, when UNESCO declared February 21 as the International Mother Language Day, national and international events are organized every year around the world, with the aim of preserving and promoting mother tongues. In 2007 the same day was accepted by the United Nations Assembly.
February 21 is set to commemorate the day (1952) of the murder of several students of Dhaka University of Bengali origin, who were killed by Pakistani police while protesting for the right to their Bengali language.
Language is an integral part of a people’s identity. Language expresses the soul and culture of a people. The language of a people, the development, the spoken in everyday life, the love and promotion of it shows in fact, the culture that reigns within the members of that people and that society.
