The tourism sector in the Balkan region holds substantial potential for growth and makes a
significant contribution to national GDP. Modern technologies enable the development of the
sector in an environmentally sustainable manner. Integrating the digital economy, tourism
economy, and ecological environment is essential for advancing green, sustainable development.
Green tourism plays a vital role in the global effort to foster a more sustainable living environment.
With much of the infrastructure still under development, there is a unique opportunity to
implement the most efficient and eco-friendly technologies and approaches during its
establishment. One of the important steps towards green tourism consists in digitalization of
tourism sector. Successful digitalization relies on developed ICT services in the country. Overall,
countries from the region are partly prepared for the tasks of integration of IT solutions in the
functioning of the tourism sector. Significant efforts are to be put in order to identify and
implement the most efficient solutions. Another challenge and opportunity consist in the use of
modern renewable energy sources. Advantage of solar energy conversion devices and systems is
that they can be used in distant location, such are some mountain accommodation capacities.
Another important step consists in the use of clean energy sources and clean transportation.
According to the authors of this work, the use of hydrogen cars can be given priority when
compared to electric cars. Developed integral solutions for green tourism are to be used in the
development of the infrastructure for tourism in the countries of the region.
